Emulsion Transfers are the delicate arrangement of the thin top layer
from a special Polaroid film. The process is done under water
where the emulsion is removed, then arranged onto a variety of mediums
while wet, often with intentional wrinkles and strategic tears that
create a dynamic and almost dimensional version of the original image.
Dinah Satterwhite often works with several layers of emulsions,
side-by-side or overlapping.
Since each Emulsion Transfer is quite unique and original, there are
unlimited possibilities for designs. The examples in the gallery below are simply
references for generating ideas. Even the paper or object that the emulsion is
placed on can be quite unique, as is the case with the first two images at the
right. Pisa in Silver depicts the famous leaning tower of Pisa in Italy.
The emulsion was placed on paper with a special silver-painted finish, which gives the
original a beautiful shiny glow throughout the image. The second image,
Golden
Knock, is a door knocker in Florence, Italy, and the emulsion was prepared on a
gold-painted water-based paper and given an "aged" look.
Dinah enjoys creating Emulsion Transfers in
multiples, as in the example of Sanctuary Garden here at the
right which
is on glass. Emulsions can also be layered or overlapped
on paper or glass, or on multiple sheets of paper or glass. Other options
include emulsions arranged on marble, wood, fabric, vases, pottery, etc.
