Transfers
|
Image Transfers involve the interruption of a special Polaroid photo
development process in order to transfer the image onto an alternative medium,
such as watercolor paper, silk, or decorative papers. These images have
a special look with rough edges that are characteristic of the transfer
procedure. Dinah Satterwhite incorporates popular subjects into her
Image Transfers, such as nature, architecture, and scenes from abroad to
demonstrate this unusual art form. Her Image Transfers can take on the
vintage look of old photographs, and blur the line between photography and
art. Once the image is transferred and has dried, they can be embellished with watercolor paints or other mediums. Dinah usually works with
the "raw" image transfer, but on occasion will accent them with colored
pencil or watercolors. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse on the right
has a little watercolor paint added to the wheat in the front of the
photo to balance the rich colors in the sky.
A special effect called "liftoff" happens when parts of the original photo do
not transfer successfully from the Polaroid to the paper, and a pale ghost of
the image is left in those areas. This can be used to create a striking
look as in the image "Grapes a Peelin' Abstract" in the gallery below. It would be hard to
duplicate this look, as various factors contributed to the liftoff on this
particular image. Dinah intentionally created liftoff for an abstract
effect in the Orchid Peel Trio (see Gallery, below), where each
photo moves closer and closer to a group of orchids. A popular spin-off
from the Orchid Peel Trio is the Orchid
Peel Trio in Neon directly below, where some colored pencil work enhances
the whole attitude of the piece.
The unpredictable nature of Image Transfers makes it an interesting and
sought-after art form.
